sewing co-op development

MNfashion is currently in development of a Sewing Co-Operative for the Twin Cities.  We are currently researching opportunities and working with an advisory group. Here is some information on where we are at:

Program Objectives: Establish Sewing Cooperative to create manufacturing and sourcing opportunities to increase designer purchasing power, fill a current production gap and provide local sustainable employment.

Phases of Development
Stage 1- basic work space in MNfashion office- fall 2009
Stage 2- build work space and potential satellite locations to fill in needs- 2009/2010
Stage 3- develop manufacturing space, studio spaces, retail etc- 2010/2011

Stage 1:

Meeting Space/Work Space/Sample Room
*Once our space is finalized, we can begin filling it with equipment (currently, 1 industrial machine) and work tables, to build a basic sample room to begin development.
*Consistent meeting space will provide inspiration that this program is “on its way” as representative stakeholders begin meeting as a committee to develop the future of the Sewing Cooperative.
*The Voltage workshop series will now be available to the public, as the Voltage designer process has evolved.

Voltage: Fashion Amplified
*Voltage will take a grass-roots approach to Sewing Cooperative development.
*Develop production calendar.
*Educate on development and production process.
*Create small volunteer-based production teams in partnership with designers and local connections.
*Invite-only fashion show in Jan/Feb allows media and retailers a sneak peek at Spring.
*Designers create 3 pieces for intimate runway show.  Full collection is shown on a line sheet, with available qty and retail location parameters. Retailers place orders for spring. MNfashion places order for availability at Voltage event.
*Designers work with their production team to meet orders placed for their spring collection, available immediately after Voltage: Fashion Amplified.
